    Chain ferry between Groveland and East Bradford, crossing the Merrimack River, with three men, horse and carriage aboard. Lewis Pemberton is at the front of the ferry holding the horse's bridle; he is wearing a top hat, vest, shirt and trousers. The ferry is a small barge or raft, drawn by a chain across the river; it commenced operation in 1824. The original image is probably circa late 1860s or early 1870s.
