Alice, Edith and Anne Allegra Longfellow, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Fanny Appleton Longfellow's daughters, from a painting by Thomas Buchanan Read made in 1859. Alice Mary is the tallest, with dark hair, standing in the rear with her arm around Anne Allegra, the youngest, also with dark hair, in front. Edith, with light hair, is standing on the left, her arm reaching across Anne Allegra. Vignetted portrait, half length. Inscription on verso: "Longfellow daughter." Printed below: "Entered according to an Act of Congress, A.D. 1861, by William and Everett, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Massachusetts." Label on verso: "From Geo. S. Tolman / 255 Washington St. / Boston." This is a commercial or souvenir carte-de-visite; Tolman may be the distributor. Photo is 9 x 6 cm mounted on card 11 x 7 cm. |
