The row of sycamores or buttonwood trees in front of the building was planted in 1748 by Hugh Tallant, the first Irishman who came to Haverhill. / And still green, and tall, and stately, /On the river's winding shores, / Stand the Occidental plan-trees, / Stand Hugh Tallant's sycamores. / - Whittier / Pleasant, indeed, is it to be able to point to so amiable and exemplary an individual as one of the founders of our own town, and the spiritual and temporal adviser and master-spirit of its early settlers. Mr. Ward died December 27, 1693." |
