Washington Square, Haverhill. A crowd of men in suits and hats is surrounding the Torrent No. 2 hand tub or handtub fire engine; one of the men is standing on it with his hand on the horn. Buildings in the background. More people are in the background on the street. Label on the side of the original image reads "Washington Square 1858 Haverhill Mass." Copy print of original image circa 1858, a tintype by Daniel Walton. Typed label on verso: "From Haverhill Weekly Gazette, April 5, 1878 / 'Torrent No. 2' / In the window of the office of the shoe manufactory of Augustus McDuffie is displayed a large photograph of Torrent Engine Company, taken twenty years ago this month, - in April, 1858. The photograph is copied from a large tintype taken by [Daniel] Walton, who, many of our citizens will remember, twenty years ago occupied rooms over Ray's Grocery (then Daggett's) corner of Merrimack and Pecker Streets. The view embraces many old landmarks, beside the engine and its company, and to a larger degree than most of us think till we have examined it, the picture is a relic or curiosity. Washington St. as it was, with its rows of white houses (and some not so white) the old brick church with its double flights of entrance steps, the 'point' opposite the church; the flagstaff in the square, and other objects familiar to many of us a score of years ago, are plainly seen in the picture. In those days 'Torrent, 2' was quartered on Essex St., and came to the square on purpose to have their 'picture took.' The 'Torrent' was one of the most serviceable machines ever connected with our fire department, it was a Howard & Davis engine and a fair specimen of their work. The 'Torrent' has been sold to a New Hampshire town, we believe.
