Description |
Gardner House, 1 Windsor Street at Arlington Street, Haverhill. Built in 1887-88 for Sylvanus Porter Gardner, shoe manufacturer, by Wheeler & Northend of Lynn. View of front and right sides, trees partially obscuring view. This ornate three story Highlands Queen Anne mansion has a cross gabled hip roof, turret with bell roof, decorative shingle patterns, porticos on front and right sides, another house on the left. It had interior frescoes by L. Haverstrach & Son, a Mexican onyx fireplace in the parlor, a library finished in black birch, and a three tiered bronze chandelier in the octagonal reception hall. Also known as the Gardner-Hayes House. The weathervane design on the turret in this photo is the letter H, cropped in this version, see glass negative HS1.1 Senter G5x7 7-11. Inscription on verso: "G. W. W. Bartlett / 1919 / Porter Gardiner [sic] / now C. H. Hayes house / Windsor St." This may be a later print. Photo is 12 x 17 cm mounted on cardboard 26 x 36 cm. |
