Benjamin Franklin Butler. Studio portrait, half-length, standing. He has grey hair and dark mustache, and is wearing a suit, shirt and tie, with a boutonniere on his lapel. He is standing behind a chair or table with a fringed cloth draped over it. Inscription on verso: "Benj. Butler." Photographer's studio printed on verso: "L. W. Cook, / Photographer, / 145 Tremont Street, and 367 Washington Street, / Boston." Photographer Lemuel Wallace Cook had a studio at those addresses between 1875-1881. Butler was a Union general during the Civil War;was instrumental in reforming labor laws for factory workers in New England (1850s); was a member of the US House of Representatives from Massachusetts 1867-1879; managed the prosecution’s case during the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson (1868); was only one of two white men to show Frederick Douglass courtesy at the National Loyalist Convention in Philadelphia (1866); he and Douglass campaigned together (1872) on behalf of the incumbent president Ulysses S. Grant. He was Governor of Massachusetts 1883-1884. Photo is 10 x 6 cm mounted on pink card 11 x 7 cm. |
