Description |
John Day Newcomb House, view from Main Street looking toward the house at 8 Summer Street and Newcomb Street, Haverhill, 1907. Three stories, two story extensions on the left, pale or white clapboard with dark shutters, hip roof, bay window on the rear side, first floor. Other houses in the background on the left and right on Summer Street, First Universalist or First Presbyterian Church. Snow on the ground. Inscription on verso: "Newcomb St / Newcomb House / Digging out foundation for new High School 1907 / 8 Summer." Inscription with another print in file: "The east half of the house which originally stood on the west corner of Summer and Newcomb Streets. Moved in 1908." Built by merchant Aroet M. Hatch in 1818-1819 as a double house at Summer and Main Streets. In 1822 he sold the eastern half of the house to Paul Spofford, his former partner and brother-in-law. Around 1826 Spofford sold his half of the house to Thomas Newcomb, silversmith; it is this half which stands on Newcomb Street. Later inherited by his son John Day Newcomb, around 1878; he lived there until his death in 1905. In 1908 the west half was torn down to build the new High School and moved to Newcomb Street. Photo is 13 x 18 cm mounted on cardboard 22 x 28 cm. |
