Description |
Thomas H. Bailey House, interior, 30 Park Street, Haverhill. Lydia Bailey, Thomas's wife, is sitting on the steps of a spiral staircase, with wallpaper behind it influenced by the designs of William Morris. The room in the foreground is furnished with a silk embroidered upholstered chair, a daybed and a secretary desk with mirror. Framed paintings or prints are on the walls. The curtains in the doorway have a floral pattern at the bottom. Floral carpets are in both rooms. A detailed note is enclosed with a print of this photo, reading in part: "The rich abundance of pattern, favored by the prosperous middle class of artistic tastes in the late 19th century, is highly evident in the Bailey home. Most striking is the bold wallpaper which shows the influence of William Morris. Equally bold are the floral patterns of the machine-made tapestry panels on the velvet portieres and on the brocaded silk upholstery of the chair in the foreground. There are three small tables each one covered with a brightly patterned & fringed cloth or with a lace doiley. The floors were not neglected in the symphony of pattern - there are two patterns of floral carpeting upon which have been boldly placed fringed Caucasian scatter rugs." Other information notes the gas lamp in the newel post has been re-fitted for electricity, with switches set into the post; and the Hitchcock chair under the stairs, originally intended for kitchen use.
