Description |
Appleton-Whittaker House, 860 Main Street, Haverhill. Five snapshot photographs, largest 7 x 12 cm, mounted together on cardboard 36 x 26 cm. Views of front and left, front and right sides, entrance, house with barn on the left. The house is saltbox style, clapboard, three stories including attic. Built by John Appleton, of Salem, Mass. 1775; Home of William Whittaker in 1793. Inscription on verso: "Taken by J. G. Moulton. / Willard Cogswell bought most of the paneling and sold it to Harry Cole who used it when he built his house at 1281 Boston Rd. They have fireplaces windows, doors and the ornamental brackets from the stairs. / Other pieces of woodwork were purchased by Harry Cole of Cole Nursery in 1921 / Dave Whittaker house / Building bought by J G Moulton and torn down in 1912 / Corner cupboard taken by Dr. H. P. Mosher [?] of Marblehead." Inscription with another print in file: "Built by John Appleton, Salem merchant / Torn down 1912." Images probably early 20th century. 1. View of front and left sides. 2. View of front and right sides. 3. Entrance door with staircase visible inside going up toward the right, second floor. Inscription on front next to photo 3: "Stair is the attic stairs in Harrison Cole House railings, bannister brackets used in downstairs hall." 4. View of front and right sides, barn with gable roof and smaller gable roof shed on the left, "Woodmont" painted on shed. 5. Closer view, front and right sides, barn with gable roof and smaller gable roof shed on the left, "Woodmont" painted on shed. |
