Description |
Calvary Baptist Church, 13 Ashland Street, Haverhill. Clapboard, hip roof with cross gables and belfry tower. Other houses on the left and right. The Church was established as the First Baptist Colored Church of Bradford in 1871, by Reverend Edmund Kelley and other residents, meeting in Thomas Jones' barn. In 1874 the congregation moved to Haverhill and was renamed the Calvary Baptist Church, holding meetings in a hall over the old Merrimack Street Post Office. This building was dedicated in September 1883, designed by architect C. Willis Damon; it survived a disastrous arson fire in November 1977, and resumed services a few year later when the church was rebuilt, holding services in the meantime at the Universalist-Unitarian Church.
