John Greenleaf Whittier Birthplace, kitchen fireplace, 305 Whittier Road, Haverhill, 1947. Hearth or fireplace in the kitchen, andirons partly visible. A row of apples is lined up at the hearth edge, a large mug of cider on the bricks on the right, a basket of walnuts on the left in the foreground. A person wearing boots is partly visible on the left, boots only visible. Illustrating verse from Whittier's poem "Snow-Bound: A Winter Idyl;" "Between the andirons’ straddling feet, The mug of cider simmered slow, The apples sputtered in a row, And, close at hand, the basket stood With nuts from brown October’s wood." Inscription on verso: "Photo by Barney Gallagher, [Haverhill] Gazette photographer / for issue of Dec. 17, 1947. / Before fireplace in kitchen of Whittier Birthplace."
