[Interior.]" 9 x 11 cm. Below is a clipping with text that reads "Haverhill Iron Works. In 1880 a number of public spirited citizens, thinking to broaden the scope of Haverhill's industries, organized the Haverhill Iron Works, the site on River street being given by the late Hon. Edwin Bowley, who was one of the largest stockholders. The capital of $10,000 was soon absorbed in the buildings, machinery, etc., and nearly $20,000 being invested in patents, it became necessary in 1882 to increase the capital to $40,000 and later, in 1890, to $80,000. Those interested were all absorbed in private enterprises that demanded their time and attention, so that for lack of care and proper management the business became a losing one, though in the meantime an extensive plant and quite an extensive patronage had grown up with them. In 1892 the corporation sold its entire business and property, both real and personal, to Hon. James H. Carleton for $53,000. Mr. Carleton associated with him as equal owners Messrs. C. W. Morse, L. L. H. Taylor and B. P. Hale. Mr. A. G. Harding was installed as manager, and the business has since steadily prospered and is becoming one of the leading foundries of the state." |
