Description |
Austin P. Nichols at his desk at the Boston Journal of Chemistry. He is seated, profile facing right. He has dark hair, beard and mustache, and is wearing a suit, shirt and tie. The rolltop desk is covered with books and papers. Hanging on the right next to a sign "A. P. Nichols" is an embroidered book bag with the initials "APN." Nichols was the only son of Dr. James R. Nichols, who built Winnekenni Castle in Haverhill and was its first occupant. Austin worked in the laboratories of J. R. Nichols & Company, graduated from the Lawrence Scientific School at Harvard, and eventually succeeded his father as editor of Popular Science News. A skilled photographer, he photographed many historic Haverhill houses and other local scenes. Inscription on verso: "Photo by HB2 - Nichols 2 / Austin P. Nichols ca. 1890 at desk Boston Journal of Chemistry / note embroidered APN book bag." May be a later print. Photo is 13 x 18 cm mounted on cardboard 26 x 36 cm. |
