Description |
Eagle House hotel, 25 Main Street, Haverhill. View of the front and right sides. Currier Block on the left, partial view of the Dr. Peter Osgood House on the right. Main building is five stories, four story building in the rear. Round portico, turret window, balconies on the third and fourth floors. The eagle ornament above the windows on the fifth floor was carved by a man named Hobbs who lived in Lawrence, MA. A horse and carriage and a small dog are on the street in front. Eagle House was built ca. 1800 for merchant James Duncan, Jr. An article circa 1911 states the house was converted to a hotel by Col. William Brown, some years after the death of James Duncan, Jr., in 1822; other sources give the date as 1819. At this time 75 additional rooms were added. Rebuilt in 1852, designed by Albert C. Heath. From a series of lantern slides, box dated 1933, image ca. 1890. See glass negative, HF3 Senter G5x7 21-21, prints HF3 Senter HPH 34-459C, 34-462A. |
