Civilian Defense Corps, various training activities at the Field Report Centre, Women's Defense Corps at the Armory, Haverhill, 1942. Inscription on verso: "World War II / Civilian Defense - 1942." Five photos, different sizes, mounted together on cardboard 36 x 26 cm. 1. Two young women, Civilian Defense Corps volunteers on duty at the Field Report Centre, Hamilton Ave., Haverhill. They are seated behind a desk; the young woman on the left is using a telephone. They may be high school students. They are not identified. There is an alarm box on the desk and globe light bulbs in front of them mounted on a frame. 8 x 11 cm. 2. Men and women seated outside, wearing coats and hats, in Haverhill Stadium, in the field, on a platform. They are seated at tables and are using telephones; they are not identified. Several young men in uniform are standing near them. Oval signs on slim poles are planted in the ground, with the words "Fire," "Engineering," "N.E.T. & T. Co.," "Hav. Elec. Co." Probably Civilian Defense Corps WWII training. Noted on verso as "Field Report Centre at Stadium - Sept. 1942." 9 x 11 cm. 3. George E. Dalrymple, director of Civilian Defense, seated at a desk in an office. A map of Haverhill, bulletins about air raids and blackouts, and a calendar showing April 1942 are on the walls. 9 x 11 cm. 4. Civilian Defense Corps, twenty-three women training inside the Haverhill Armory. Inscription on verso: "Women's Defense Corps training in Armory, 1942." The women are marching indoors in formation around the perimeter of the room. Three of the women are African American; the rest are white. They are wearing dresses or sweaters or shirts with pants. They are not identified. 9 x 11 cm. 5. The same group of women, training inside the Armory, are marching in formation led by George T. Laing. He is wearing a suit and is on the left in front of the group. 9 x 11 cm. |
