Austin P. Nichols. Nichols is reclining on a large boulder outside in a grassy field, propped on his left elbow. He is wearing a bowler hat and a dark suit. There are a few small trees behind the boulder; location is not identified. Nichols was the only son of Dr. James R. Nichols, who built Winnekenni Castle in Haverhill and was its first occupant. Austin worked in the laboratories of J. R. Nichols & Company, graduated from the Lawrence Scientific School at Harvard, and eventually succeeded his father as editor of Popular Science News. A skilled photographer, he photographed many historic Haverhill houses and other local scenes. See print, HG2 Senter HPH 8-113A. Image late 19th or early 20th century. |
