H. C. Tanner, City Bakery, Odd Fellows Block, 24 Main Street, Haverhill. Eight men outside the bakery, seven in aprons, Tanner in the center in street clothes. Another small boy on the left. The bakery's striped awning is folded. Odd Fellows Hall building on the right. From information with print in file: "Henry C. Tanner (1843-1911), an Englishman, learned the baker's and confectioner's trade in Cork, Ireland with his uncle, to whom he was apprenticed for seven years. He was the seventh generation of his family to follow the confectioner's trade. He came to Haverhill in 1877 after seven years as a silk buyer in Shanghai. Within a short time he became the most noted caterer in the Merrimack Valley." Original image late 19th or early 20th century. |
