Massachusetts Tercentenary Celebration & Parade, Haverhill, 1930. Celebration of the 300th Anniversary of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Six photomechanical prints of photographs, from the Haverhill Gazette, mounted together on cardboard 26 x 36 cm. The parade was Saturday, June 28, 1930; more festivities may have taken place Sunday June 29. Housed with Historical Photographic Print Collection. 1. Marching band in pale uniforms followed by people in formation carrying an American flag. Caption: "St. James parish group marching in the Second division of Saturday's parade." 10 x 11 cm. 2. Mayor Forrest V. Smith, seated on the ground, dressed in a suit and feather headdress smoking a long pipe, with a woman and man in indigenous clothing. They are not identified. Another man and a crowd is in the background. Caption: "Mayor Forrest V. Smith smoking the pipe of peace with tribal chiefs at opening of Indian Village Saturday morning in G.A.R. park." 11 x 11 cm. 3. Polish Young Men's Association marching. They are wearing pale uniforms with dark capes and hats. Caption: "Polish Young Men's Association, heading the prize-winning Polish marching unit in the Civic division." 11 x 11 cm. 4. Lithuanian parade group, women marching with a banner followed by a person with a flag and children; they are all wearing pale uniforms. Caption: "Lithuanian Community, one of the many racial groups in the Civic division." 13 x 11 cm. 5. Haverhill Italian Girls' Club, people marching in formation. The girls are wearing pale dresses, and are marching with a banner in front reading "H.I.G.C. / Welcome," and behind the first group is another banner "Welcome." Caption: "Haverhill Italian Girls' Club, heading the Italian-American group in the [cut off]." 13 x 11 cm. 6. Elks Lodge 165 members, men marching with a large white elk statue float. Caption: "Haverhill Lodge of Elks in Second division with huge white elk at the head of the group." 10 x 11 cm. |
