John B. Gordon, Chief Engineer / Fire Chief, Haverhill Fire Department, 1898. Studio portrait, head and shoulders, facing three-quarter left, photomechanical print of a photograph from an unidentified publication, with biographical text. He has dark hair and mustache and is wearing a uniform with hat. Printed caption with portrait: "John B. Gordon, Chief Engineer / President Fireman's Relief Association," and in ink "1898." Below is a separate four paragraph clipping from an unidentified publication (1896), a biography of Gordon. He was born in Sandown, New Hampshire, June 10, 1849, and is stated as being 47 years old in this article. As a boy he was apprenticed as a smith, and after moving to Chester worked in a forge. He moved to Haverhill in 1872, and joined the Fire Department in 1881 with the Chemical Company, He was appointed Captain in 1882. He was Fire Chief 1890-1891, "ousted through politics," and was then Chief again 1893-1923. He was at the time of printing Superintendent of Fire Alarm, President of the Fireman's Relief Association, member of the National Association of Chief Engineers and the Chief's Club of Massachusetts, member of the Palestine Lodge and Knights of Pythias, and a member of the Portland Street Church. He married June 4, 1877, but his wife and son are not named in the article. Prints are 16 x 11 cm and 14 x 9 cm mounted together on cardboard 31 x 22 cm.
