Description |
Ida Lee's Minstrels, disturbance at City Hall, Haverhill, 1871; illustration and news article. Wood engraving illustration, captioned "The Fate of 'Ida Lee's Female Minstrels' at Haverhill, Mass." from The New Varieties, Volume 1 No 17, week ending Monday, May 1, 1871. The image shows a man and two women onstage, in blackface and costume, being driven from the stage by the audience throwing garbage at them. The second photo is a copy of the news article clipped and mounted, with the same title as the caption. The article states the troupe played at City Hall in Haverhill, advertising "30 performers, a full band and orchestra, every lady an artist and every star a brilliant one," but the small troupe with few instruments, four men and two women in blackface, was harrassed by the crowd and pelted with refuse. The performance was shut down. Black and white copy negatives. |
