Gardner House, 1 Windsor Street at Arlington Street, Haverhill. Built in 1887-88 for Sylvanus Porter Gardner, shoe manufacturer, by Wheeler & Northend of Lynn. View of right side, lower stories. This ornate three story Highlands Queen Anne mansion, painted white, has a cross gabled hip roof, turret with bell roof on the left, decorative shingle patterns, porticos on front and right sides with balcony above right portico (in picture). Low stone wall with small statues on the right side of the house. It originally had interior frescoes by L. Haverstrach & Son, a Mexican onyx fireplace in the parlor, a library finished in black birch, and a three tiered bronze chandelier in the octagonal reception hall. Also known as the Gardner-Hayes House. Date on slide: Jul 85, number 9. |
