Description |
First Settlers Monument, Water Street, Haverhill. The stone monument is on a grass island with cars parked behind it. On the left are several small clapboard buildings, one with a sign "Lubritorium;" on the right is a two story clapboard building. The Merrimack River and Bradford are visible in the background. Inscription with another photo of the monument: "Mill stones taken from old Peaslee mill at Nicholsville at Brandy Brow Road, given by Geo. M. G. Nichols & erected 1911. Fieldstones of base taken from Summer St. site of old Parsonage / Tablet originally intended to commemorate Dustons changed to honor John Ward & first settlers." Photo by the Haverhill Gazette, taken April 29, 1948. Newsclipping on verso reads: "Historic parking lot - This area off Water st., with the monument marking it as the landing place of Haverhill's first settlers, hit the news today. Its proposed use as a used car lot was criticized by Alderman Joseph J. Durso this morning. The alderman feels the city-owned property should be set aside as a park if it has historic value." |
