Description |
John S. Spofford, Nelson S. Spofford and family with horse and carriage. A dark horse, facing left, is hitched to a covered carriage with two women and a baby in the front seat, a girl and a boy in the rear seat. John S. Spofford is standing on the left in front of the horse with his hands on the carriage shaft, Nelson S. Spofford is standing in front of the rear wheel of the carriage on the right, resting his arm on the wheel. The men are wearing suits and hats, John Spofford with a mustache, Nelson Spofford with glasses, white hair and beard. The women and girl are wearing dresses, the boy is wearing a shirt, trousers and hat. The woman on the left in the front seat is holding the baby, they are both wearing hats, as are the girl and boy in the rear seat. They are in a field in an unidentified location; the people in the carriage are not identified. The photo is faded but trees and a house are discernible in the background. Inscription on verso: "Is this near the old Spofford house - Georgetown? / John S. Spofford & his family / Nelson Spofford, his father, at rear end." Photographer's studio stamp above: "H. P.
