Description |
George and David P. Harmon House, 86 Summer Street, Haverhill. Identified with print in file as the "George Harmon House." Three stories, clapboard, cross gabled roof, porch with columns in front and on the right, two story extension on the left. View of front, the right side facing the street. Three children, a boy and two girls, are in front on the sidewalk near the fence; they are not identified. The girls have doll carriages. Other images of this house in our collection are identified as the "David Harmon House," "Dr. Clement House" and "George A. Kimball House." Inscription on verso: "Enlarged from stereoscopic photo / D. P. Harmom House / Geo. A. Kimball House / Dr. G. Colburn Clement House / Mrs. Clara E. C. Ellis House / Summer St., corner Maple Ave. / Reputed to be used for Underground Railroad." Other houses on the right. David P. Harmon built the house; he sheltered enslaved people here as a stop on the Underground Railway. Original was a stereoscopic glass negative, probably circa 1860s or 1870s. This is a later print.
