Description |
Blacksmith, 34 Stage Street at the corner of Water Street, Haverhill. A small two story clapboard building with carriage doors. A carriage is on the left, and a horse hitched to a carriage is in front. An unidentified boy or man in a suit and hat is inside the open door. Another building visible on the right. John Johnson, blacksmith, settled in Haverhill in 1657. His descendants carried on the trade for generations. This building was probably built in 1820; the business was owned by James Kief from 1883 to 1893, then by Archibald C. McMillan from 1894 to 1902, when it was torn down and replaced by the Dole & Childs stable. Inscription on verso: "Gift of A. G. Harding / sign over door on left says A Johnson / Blacksmith Shop Stage St / said to have been Johnson's - the first in Haverhill - doubtful." The sign is not legible. Inscription on another print in file: "Archibald C. McMillan's Blacksmith Shop 34 Stage St. about 1894-1902." Photo by George W. W. Bartlett, early 20th century. See print HF4.10 Senter HPH 15-203A. |
