Kimball Tavern, interior, stove, 2 Salem Street, Bradford, Haverhill. Wood stove with scallop design, wide chimney above, birch logs on andirons inside. Mantel behind the stove with an oval framed needlepoint above. Fire shovel on the right, small child's chair on the left. Photomechanical print of a photograph from an unidentified newspaper. Printed in clipping below: "First Stove - In the west parlor of the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. Herbert Marble, 2 Salem Street, Bradford, is the first stove in Bradford. Over the stove is a needle-point of a Madonna more than 100 years old. Sunday morning worshipers at the second church built in Bradford, located on the common, used to get foot-warming embers from the stove." Inscription on verso: "Franklin stove was the first in Bradford in 1831. It was originally in the east front room, but removed to the west room shown here by the Marble[s]. People took embers from the stove for foot and food warmers when attending lengthy church meetings. Dr. Geo. Cogswell used the west room for his office." Marble's Antiques owned by J. Herbert Marble was here 1924-1945. Print is 15 x 10 cm mounted on cardboard 36 x 26 cm. Housed with Historical Photographic Print Collection. |
