Description |
The Soldiers' Monument in Haverhill, dedication ceremony, 1869. Statue surrounded by women or girls in white dresses, crowd looking on in the background. Houses in the background and on the building on the right a sign for "J. K. Moody / Groceries." Monument, a soldier in uniform holding a rifle, was designed by Calvin Weeks and was dedicated July 5, 1869. The names of 187 men are carved in its base. The face was modeled after Mayor Henry Jackson How, who died in the Civil War and for whom the G.A.R. Post is named. Inscription on verso: "Enlarged from stereoscopic photograph by Walter R. Merryman - 1947 / House on the left home of Asaph Hill (-1861), farmer & wife Harriet E. Kimball (-1870). / Building in back right was grocery store owned by J. K. Moody who lived upstairs / Dedication of Soldier's Monument July 5 1869." Photo is 14 x 12 cm mounted on cardboard 36 x 28 cm. |
