Charles H. Chase House, 4 Mt. Vernon Street at Highland Avenue, Haverhill. View of front and left sides. Two and three stories with three story square tower, portico, bay windows, wrap around porch. Trees lining the street. Inscription on verso: "Built by Elias T. Ingalls, (1810- ) shoe manufacturer, son in law of Samuel Chase, early shoe mfgr. / He attended Bradford Academy intending to become a minister, his health failed & he relinquished the plan & entered business in Haverhill. In 1860 he began to manufacturer [sic] shoes, being one of the first to use machinery. He perfected the first practical machine for sole cutting . In 1865 opened a wholesale shoe business in Louisville, Kentucky / see p. 182 Ingalls Gen. / Built by L. Thomas Johnson about 1868? Later Chase." Inscription on reverse of lantern slide: "Residence of Chas. H. Chase Corner Highland Ave & Mt. Vernon Street." See HS1.1 Senter GLS 1-29. Image late 19th or early 20th century.
