Claude Jeremiah Proctor Griffin. Three-quarter length portrait, seated in chair with carved back. He is African American and has dark hair and eyes. He is wearing a suit with shirt, vest and tie, and is holding an open book. Inscription on verso: "Claude Griffin H. H. H. '09" [sic H. H. S. for Haverhill High School, Class of 1909]. The verso of the folder has the inscription "Claude J. P. Griffin H. H. S. '09" and a round starburst design inkstamp. Photographer's studio embossed at bottom of mount: "McKeen / Haverhill / Mass." Claude was born in Haverhill August 6, 1891, the son of Carrie W. Walker and William Griffin. He was listed in a Boston City Directory in 1914 as a shipper by trade. He married Kate M. Anderson October 12, 1917 in New York City; another record names her as Marguerite Anderson. His World War I and World War II draft registration cards gives his addresses as 167 West 133rd Street Manhattan (WWI) and 109-43 175th Street in Jamaica, Queens, New York (WWII, age 50); he was working as a factory employee in Long Island City when he lived in Queens. He died July 8, 1949. Photo is 15 x 10 cm mounted on card 23 x 16 cm, housed in original folder 24 x 16 cm (folded). The folder cover is embossed with the words "09 Class." |
