Description |
Proclamation sent from Haverhill, England, in honor of Haverhill's 250th Anniversary. The ceremonial document is bordered with an elaborate design of vines and flowers, with insets of two buildings in the English city of Haverhill, and is written in gothic lettering. The top has a moiré fabric scroll cover attached. It is signed at the bottom by the Ministers of Religion and the Chairman and staff of the Court of Summary Jurisdiction (of Haverhill, England). The beginning paragraph reads: "To the Honourable The Mayor, The City Council & Citizens of Haverhill, Massachusetts, in the United States of America. We, the undersigned Local Authorities, Public Officers, and Citizens of the Ancient Mother Town of Haverhill, in the Counties of Suffolk and Essex, in England, desire to convey to you our friendly greeting and hearty congratulation upon the celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the settlement, in the year A.D. 1640, by John Ward, a native of this place, and others who accompanied him from the Old World to the New." A representative (not named) from Haverhill, England was invited to and attended the Haverhill, Massachusetts anniversary celebration. The document is dated 27 May, 1890. Photo by John G. Blacklock.
