Description |
World War II memorial plaque dedication, City Hall, Haverhill, 1944. Six men are standing in front of the large wall plaque, curtains on either side of the plaque. Left to right: Peter E. Trainor, in police uniform; Donald K. Campbell; Raymond Allen; Haverhill Mayor Albert William Glynn; Reverend Francis V. Cummings (in clerical clothing); and an unidentified man in police uniform. The plaque has two shields with stripes, the one on the left reads 1944, the one on the right 194 [blank]. The text at the top reads: "They gave up youth and life for their homeland / May the morning sunshine smile on them forever," followed by thirty-six names, not legible, and the words at the bottom "The City of Haverhill, Massachusetts with all its gratitude." Portraits on either side are, left, unidentified, possibly William H. Moody, and right, John Greenleaf Whittier. Inscription on verso: "1. Peter E. Trainor / 2. Donald K. Campbell / 3. Raymond Allen / 4. Mayor Albert W. Glynn / 5. Rev. Francis V. Cummings / 6/ [blank] / Dedication of Memorial Plaque to Haverhill World War Soldiers who died / Feb. 12, 1944." Photo is 16 x 21 cm mounted on cardboard 26 x 36 cm. |
