Description |
Eagle House, hotel, 25 Main Street, Haverhill, ca. 1860. Photograph of a wood engraving print. People on horses, women and men, horse and coach or carriage outside the hotel, carriage house or stable on the right in the background, tree on the right. Main building is five stories, four story building in the rear not visible. Round portico, turret window, balconies on the third and fourth floors. Above the turret window is a sign "Wm. Brown, Jr.," and above the third floor balcony "Eagle House." The eagle ornament above the windows on the fifth floor was carved by a man named Hobbs who lived in Lawrence, MA. Eagle House was built ca. 1800 for merchant James Duncan, Jr. An article circa 1911 states the house was converted to a hotel by Col. William Brown some years after the death of James Duncan, Jr., in 1822; other sources give the date as 1819. At this time 75 additional rooms were added. Rebuilt in 1852, designed by Albert C. Heath. Photograph of a wood engraving print. Inscription on verso: "Photo by Mr. [Walter R.] Merryman from cut in early directory, 1860 / Eagle House." Photo probably mid 20th century. Photo is 14 x 13 cm mounted on cardboard 36 x 27 cm. |
