    Portrait of Captain Valentine Bagley Jr. (1773-1839). Head and shoulders, facing three-quarter right. Caption printed at bottom: "Capt. Valentine Bagley." John Greenleaf Whittier's poem "The Captain's Well" is the story of his journey through the Arabian desert after a shipwreck. When he returned to Amesbury in 1796, he built a well for his community. This is a photograph of a print; the slide is hand colored.
